"Lone Star General: Hiram B. Granbury"

On January 8, 2004, James and
Rebecca Drake donated their latest book, Lone Star General: Hiram B.
Granbury, to Friends of Raymond. All proceeds from the sale of the book
will be used to develop and preserve the battlefield where Colonel Hiram
Granbury commanded the 7th Texas Infantry during the Battle of Raymond.
The book is co-authored by Tom Holder of Fort Worth, Texas.
Present to receive the donation on behalf of Friends of Raymond were: Dick
Kilby, president, Parker Hills, vice president, David McCain, treasurer,
Isla Tullos, secretary, and board members, Gordon Skelton, Mark Bozeman,
Allen Polk, and John Barber. Also present were members of Friends of
Raymond and guests attending the meeting.
The
book cover features a color portrait of Hiram B. Granbury painted by local
Civil War artist, Jerry McWilliams. The painting depicts Colonel Hiram
Granbury in front of the Raymond courthouse the night before the Battle of
Raymond.
Lone
Star General: Hiram B. Granbury will premiere at the Raymond Country Fair
on May 1, 2004. Tom Holder will also be present for the book signing.
Afterwards, the book will be marketed in Raymond, the Vicksburg Military
Park, the Hood County Historical Society, Granbury, Texas, and the Hill
College Confederate Museum, Hillsboro, Texas.

Rebecca Blackwell Drake, Historian and Author
Rebecca Drake of
Raymond, Mississippi, is the author of four Civil War books. She is
the recipient of numerous awards, including the William D. McCain
Publication Award presented by the Mississippi Division Sons of
Confederate Veterans. She is also the recipient of a Resolution of
Commendation from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History
for historic preservation. She is instrumental in helping to
preserve and develop Raymond's Civil War Battlefield. All proceeds
from the sale of her books are donated to battlefield preservation.
Thomas D. Holder, Researcher
Thomas Holder of Fort
Worth, Texas, is an avid Civil War researcher who grew up around the
battlefields of Nashville and Franklin. An interest in Hiram B.
Granbury led him to Mississippi where he spent years studying the
history of the Granberry family in Hinds and Madison counties. His
research widened to include Fort Donelson, Fort Warren, and all of
the sites identified with the Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Tennessee
campaigns. He is a member of the Fort Worth Civil War Round Table,
the K. M. Van Zandt Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Waco
Guards, Company A, Waco, Texas.
Jerry McWilliams, Artist
Jerry McWilliams of
Raymond, Mississippi, received his early training at the Chicago
School of Art. His paintings hang in prominent museums throughout
the State of Mississippi: The Sinking of the U. S. S. Cairo,
Vicksburg Military Park; Jefferson Davis with his Dog, Traveler,
Beauvoir Museum, Biloxi; and General John C. Pemberton, Old
Courthouse Museum, Vicksburg. His portraits of Colonel Randal
McGavock, God's Own Gentleman, and Hiram B. Granbury: Lone Star
General will hang in the Raymond Military Park Tourist Center.
McWilliams lives in Southern Cedars, one of the two plantation homes
built by the Granberry family during the 1830s.
